As we move into September, this week has offered up some beautiful and inspiring firey oranges, reds, wind swept greens, shadowy blue hues and the company of blackberry foraging hens 🧡
We planted native Spindle and some Hazel through our Willow hedge this time two years ago. The hazel and the spindle are beginning to look so much stronger this month. I've been clearing the base of the hedgerow trees of #birdsfoottreffoil by hand over a couple of evening this week. The Treffoil is a great plant for biodiversity and for the soil and it benefits surrounding plants with it's nitrogen fixing properties. It is winter-hardy and tolerant of dry summer conditions. It has now gone to seed in here and has created a carpet spread area in blocking light and space from the base of these young trees so it needed to be cleared. I'm looking forward to seeing the spindle thrive and come into fruit and flower but for now the leaves are putting on a lovely vibrant display.
This watercolour and pastel hedgerow study on paper from is inspired by our shadowy September garden with it's scattering of montbretia and other later summer flowers. Giclée prints will be available on the website this Autumn 🍂
